Food for Thought

Why it’s important to align with organizations that share your philosophy:

When you start something new, success and financial stability don’t come overnight. With limited funds, we at One Spark have had to get creative in our resourcefulness. Thankfully, there are organizations like Khan Academy. The story of how Salman Khan, a former hedge fund analyst, started this amazing resource for learning is a familiar story for us at One Spark: here is someone who just wanted to go good things for others, and do it with integrity. In 2009, Khan used Yahoo Doodle to tutor his cousin in math- she lived in another part of the country. The videos started being used by others, and quickly became invaluable tools to support learning. Now, this non-profit organization is backed big time by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Google, and a number of other leading philanthropists so that it can be offered to students and life-long learners all around the world- for FREE. Way to go, Mr. Khan. We at One Spark are proud that we can benefit from your brilliance, and your creation of Khan Academy.

If you have 17 minutes, be inspired by his story, and message.

Yes, Food Matters...

In my post “The Case for Healthy Lunch”, I shared about an important aspect of our whole child philosophy: a focus on healthy eating. Please take 20 minutes to watch this video and join the movement to support Jamie Oliver’s wish: “I wish for your help to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity.”

We at One Spark Academy couldn’t have said it any better, and we support this mission every day.

Changing Educational Paradigms

The philosophy of education that “sparked” One Spark Academy didn’t evolve overnight. Like many progressive educators, I have long seen the need for a true paradigm shift. However, we are all a bit too programmed by generations of “industrialized” education, and finding creative avenues to amend the system is a daunting challenge.

Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither will a paradigm shift occur. But, taking small steps together, it will.
