Our local community of Thousand Oaks has recently been through some incredibly challenging and heart-wrenching events. Those who were directly impacted by those events will not have the resources to contribute this year, and many others have donated to support those in dire need.
One Spark Academy has been a lifeline to many families whose children need a nurturing place to land. And, we continue to need our community’s support to provide the learning experiences our students need.
For the past six years, our year-end online campaign has helped us with critical operating funds. Whether by way of a small or large tax-deductible gift, every single donor helps us by giving what they can. We are grateful.
Our goal for this year’s giving campaign is $15,000 raised between November 24, 2018, to February 1, 2019. Here’s how we will use our donations this year:
Fill in for our temporary shortfall. Last year, 29 successful kids left our program – it was the most we’ve ever sent off. We were “top heavy” last year: 17 students were 8th graders moving to high school, four were already in high school moving to college, three moved away, and others went to local middle schools. Due to our space limitations at the Teen Center, we were at capacity last year and turned away new students. Therefore, we had to rebuild our student body this year; we started the year with the most new students we’ve ever had, but we’re still rebuilding.
Purchase much-need supplies.
Pay for three OSA teacher chaperones to attend our outdoor program in the Olympic Peninsula, WA, in April 2019.
Provide a few scholarships for students-in-need to take additional classes they couldn’t afford otherwise, as well as participate in enriching activities.

Why We Aren’t Running A Crowdfunding Campaign This Year
Generosity, where we ran our campaign for the past several years, has converted to GoFundMe for non-profits. Right now, GoFundMe is being used almost entirely for those raising money for the families devastated by the Borderline Shooting in our town, the Woolsey Fire, and the Camp Fire in northern California. We support those efforts.
Crowdfunding platforms charge up to 9% for the service, although less for non-profits. By hosting here, 100% of your funds go directly to support One Spark Academy. The only loss is from credit card transactions.
Crowdfunding platforms distribute either monthly or when the campaign ends. By hosting here, your donations are available to One Spark Academy right away.
Any donation of $25 or more will have their name included on our donor list (below), and receive a personal letter from us, emailed by March 1, 2019. Contribution amounts will not be included.
About Us, and Why We Need YOU
If you’re here, then you already know the value of One Spark Academy, or you know someone who does. But to give you some background, One Spark Academy was founded in 2011 with one mission in mind: to give kids who need something different a path to a great education. We’re a small learning center for middle-school aged kids (and older) who, for a variety of reasons, don’t fare well in traditional settings. We receive NO state funding, nor are we independently wealthy. We rely on registration fees and donations to do what we love to do: teach kids well! We have never charged families what it actually costs to run OSA. That is why we became a 501(c)(3)non-profit, and that is why we are asking for YOUR help.
